This past year seemed to fly right by and before we knew it, here we are again at the end of the year, looking back at all the projects we took on and memories we made. In keeping with last year, we thought it would be fun to post a roundup of the top 10 most popular posts we published over the past year.

Holiday Bits & Photos
As the holidays come to a close this year, we wanted to take the opportunity to share a few more pics from the first big Christmas we hosted in our house. You can see all our holiday decorations here and today we wanted to post a few random bits and pieces along with some family shots to help remember this holiday season.

Decorating for the Holidays
Our steel deer head from The Steel Fork gets in the holiday spirit.
We hope you've been having a wonderful holiday week and finish to the year. Tim and I were both able to take a little time off to celebrate Christmas with our families and are enjoying getting a few little things done around the house that have been in the back of our minds to cross off the list.

My Best Man
This past weekend my parents came over and spent the weekend with Mary, the kids and I. We had been planning for them to come and stay in order to teach me how to cook the traditional country ham we have at Christmas dinner each year. This is the first year Mary and I will be hosting Christmas dinner — it's always and forever been at my parents' house, so it's kind of a big deal for all of us.

The "JOYS" of dog ownership...
Sometimes when Basil doesn't know we are watching, we catch him doing the funniest things. For example, the other day, we snuck up on him as he was propping himself up on the couch to get a good look out the front windows...

Weekend Basics
We awoke on Saturday to the sounds of the Christmas Parade getting started down Broad Street here in Richmond. Is it bad that I watched it from the TV rather than making the couple block walk over to check it out? Yes it is. Here's to making up for it this time next year.

Hunting Shark's Teeth: One Generation to the Next
Over Thanksgiving, Mom and I decided to take my sister's oldest two children (4 and 2 1/2) down to the rivershore to get a little energy out of them and see if we could try to teach them how to find shark's teeth. For generations, people have been finding shark's teeth along this strip of the James River and it always amazes me how every time I come, there are still more to be found.

V is for...
Back in October as I was scrolling through all my favorite blogs in my reader, I came to a screeching halt when another Richmond blogger (shout out to Richmond Thrifter!) was talking about a huge collection of metal industrial marquee letters she'd come across at an antique shop just outside the city lines. When she said they were selling for $39 a pop, I practically got in the car that same moment.

Weekend Basics
We woke up early Saturday morning to the sounds of clapping and cheering out front. We'd never been "cheered" out of bed before, but after a quick look out the top landing of our bedroom we realized the Richmond Marathon track was funneled directly onto our street for a short path of the run.

Celery Update: Time for a Trim
It's been a couple months since we'd updated the progress of our celery plant. Since re-growing this plant from a chopped off base of celery about 9 months ago, we've really enjoyed watching the plant grow and evolve. The stalks continue to thicken and shoot up from the center and we've been able to chop off stalks here and there as needed to use in recipes like soups or as flavoring in other dishes.

Weekend Basics
We had Brandon hanging with us again this weekend. Sometimes I still can't believe he's already a senior in high-school. When he wasn't doing homework and filling out college applications (#suchaprouddad), he helped us catch up on season 7 and into season 8 of The Office and got us slightly interested in watching The Walking Dead. Not completely sold on that one yet even though we're huge AMC fans.

Big Reveal: Our Sweet Potato Harvest
The big day we'd waited for, 7 months in the making, finally came! We harvested the sweet potatoes we started growing from slips in our windowsill and then outdoors in coffee sack bags. We'd started way back when with an organic potato split in half that looked like this (more on the whole project here)...

Our Trip To The High Line in New York City
Mary and I have been wanting to visit and walk The High Line in New York since it recently opened — the High Line is a newly finished and opened public park that was built on an old rail system that had since become overgrown with natural vegetation and trees and was actually in danger of being torn down. It's now owned by NYC and maintained as an incredibly beautiful public park where visitors can literally walk above the bustling streets on the west side of the city.

Virginia Farm Bureau at the Virginia State Fair
Last week Mary and I had the chance to visit the Virginia State Fair. Neither of us had been in years. It has probably been about 16 years since I've been, and Mary remembers going as a child with her family every year the fair came around.

Weekend Basics
Saturday we got up early and hit the streets for a walk with Basil. We've enjoyed getting up just before 8am on Saturdays to walk Basil throughout the fan — it seems like the neighborhood is still asleep, the birds are loud and lately we've been hitting lots of little yard sales that pop up here and there throughout the streets.

Easing Into Fall Decorating
We're easing into fall slowly this year. That being said, I couldn't help but pick up a handful of baby pumpkins to scatter across the house on our last trip to the grocery store.

Our Best Mad Men Style
Saturday night we had plans to go to one of Tim's best friend's 50th birthday party. Since the birthday boy was born in 1962, the invite requested we all dress up in our finest 1960's party attire. Being big Mad Men fans, we jumped at the chance to take it more in the direction of "Don & Megan" vs. the hippie vibe.
