Making Memories in Hudson, New York

We mentioned last week that I was spending time in Hudson, New York. I'd been excited to make the trip since it would be my first time visiting Hudson and the first time I'd gotten to see the Hudson Etsy office. I was headed up for a Merchandising work retreat with my teammates and the entire experience was such a treat.

I made it safely back from a great week in Hudson, NY late Thursday and am looking forward to sharing a little recap with some of my favorite photos from the trip here on the blog tomorrow.

Repurposed Planter: A New Home For our Habaneros

Last weekend we made a pretty cool little plant display that's holding this year's habanero peppers. It was a really quick little project that used up some of the things we've had lying around in storage — which is always a good feeling when you finally put something to use you've been meaning to get to.

Ladder Blanket Storage

We've got a ladder in our living room and it's holding our extra blankets! Today we're sharing the background behind this little update.

17 Apart Turns Two!

Image by Tori Watson of Marvelous Things Photography

Today marks the 2 year anniversary since we published our first post here on 17 Apart! Over the past year (since our last anniversary post) we've been so proud to stay connected with so many of you and meet even more people with similar interests and sometimes eerily similar stories or connections. We continued to work on little projects around the house and garden, and are probably most proud to have pulled off and gotten through planning and putting together the wedding of our dreams. It's been so fun to have a platform where we can share the details about so many aspects of our lives and it continues to amaze us that you want to keep up with us!

How To: Make Spent Beer Grain Dog Treats Recipe

Basil appreciates a good brew day just as much as we do, but for his own selfish reasons — he knows he's going to get some fresh dog cookies made with the leftover spent grains from the brew!

Weekend Basics

We had a great weekend here in Richmond and mainly hung close to home. We've also been having fun looking at and writing down answers to all of your questions rolling in from Friday's pre-blogiverary post. There's still time to ask away before Wednesday's post, get all the details here.

We got to stop in at two local markets this weekend — our regular South of the James stop and we also checked out the Sunday Carytown Market for the first time. Both were filled with fresh, beautiful, seasonal produce and we ended up bringing back quite the haul of fresh veggies.

Your Burning Questions: It's That Time Again!

It's that time again — our 2 year blogiversary (blog launch anniversary) is coming up on Wednesday and we had so much fun opening up the forum for your questions this time last year, we thought it would be fun to keep with the tradition and do it again this year.

Little Coincidences: Happy Birthday Granny!

Today would have been my grandmother's 102nd birthday. Granny (Mary Elizabeth Trevillian Andrews) made it to 100 and passed away in April of 2012, which is still taking time to process. Granny was my paternal grandmother, the one I was named for and the same one who's cake toppers and accompanying note were on display at our wedding.

Origins Farm: Smoky Prosciutto Eggplant Pizzas

Origins Farm is at it again — growing different. Do you know what they had a the farmers market last week and will have again this week in limited supply? Artichokes, grown in Hanover County. Artichokes in Virginia? Well, that is what they are about and we love them for it. You can bet we'll be picking a few of our own up this Saturday morning.

Locker Console Update: Sealing and Waiting

Since we first told you about our plans for turning an old army locker we found at an alley sale into a console for our kitchen, we've made some slow but steady progress with the project. As you know, first we gave the locker a thorough cleaning and stripped down the majority of paint layers it had undergone over the years to reveal and industrial, layered metal finish...

Weekend Basics

We started out the weekend with a little trip up 95 to see Sheryl Crow play in Fredericksburg. Mary's been a long time fan and we both had a lot of fun, realizing it's been one of the first bigger outings we've had in a long time.

Foraging for Edible Mushrooms in Richmond Virginia

Garden Update: We've Got Tomatoes & Caprese Salads

So! We've got a lone tomato. It's been a hot summer so far and growth has been a little slower going than we anticipated, but we have been growing tomato plants in containers again this season and as you can see are starting to see the fruits (fruit?) of our labor!

Stripping Away The Years of Paint from Our Vintage Army Locker

We hope everyone is having a nice long weekend and might have gotten a chance to see a few fireworks? Yesterday we enjoyed getting to spend some time around the grill (and smoker!) with family. This weekend we're excited to continue working on our latest larger scale project — one we've officially dubbed the "Alley Locker Console."

How To: Grow & Propagate Basil From Cuttings

Basil is one of the easiest and fastest plants for propagation and summer is the perfect time to experiment in your own garden. Propagating basil cuttings is a great way to keep your basil supply going strong all season long, and a fun way to create new starter plants that make great hostess or parting gifts for all those summer get togethers. We've been trying it ourselves over the past couple of weeks and are already seeing success!

More to See: Updated Candid Wedding Photos

Just a quick note to let you know we updated the "crowdsourced" photo post we created for the wedding with a bunch of new candid shots from the big day. My sweet cousin, Ashley, sent us a whole new slew of fun shots from the wedding, including snaps of my nieces and nephews stealing the hearts of everyone while they trotted down the aisle and some more great previews of the ceremony setting before everything got started...
