Weekend Basics

The weekend got an an early start for Tim — last Friday he spent some time back at Lockhart Family Farm learning more about bees and different practices around beekeeping. We'd first visited the farm for a community dinner back in August and after keeping in touch about the right timing to learn more about the bees, Tim was excited to go back:

Yes ladies, this man belongs to me. He'll be excited to share more from the farm visit soon.

How To: Polish Silver in a Baking Soda & Salt Bath

A couple weeks ago when we shared the story behind creating a full set of mismatched silverplate flatware, we got the following question from one of our commenters:

"For polishing the silver, are you familiar with the trick of soaking the silver in a basin or pan with a piece of aluminum foil, some baking soda, and salt? Works like a charm!"

Neither of us had heard of this silver polishing tip before, but we're always up for trying a new home remedy, especially if it saves us time — so we pulled out the supplies and gave it a go after reading into a few more sources online.

Today I'm excited to share the creative project my best friend, Emily, has been working on over the past year. You might remember Emily and her husband, J, from our first and second summer trips down to Asheville, NC or from the photoshoot we had fun doing 2 summers ago. This time last year we were celebrating Emily and J's wedding here in Virginia. Now she's releasing a new EP, Get Bothered, and kicking off a release tour!

Money Tree Update: Cinnamon Root Stimulator

When we posted photos about our (ahem, mymoney tree accident last week, one commenter, Gin, kindly suggested that we: "PUT CINNAMON ON THE BROKEN TWIG! QUICK! And get it into some soil! The cinnamon will help start new roots as well as keep the fungus & bacteria at bay. Works better than ANY of the store-stuff!"

So what did I do? Well, I dipped that stem in some cinnamon STAT and promptly pushed it back down into the soil of the same planter the main plant is in...

Weekend Basics

We spent a lot of time outdoors for this first official weekend in autumn. First up, we went to see our niece, Virginia, play a soccer game. There aren't many things cuter than watching a group of 4 years olds run around in full soccer gear...

Estate Finds: Our 8 Gallon Blue Crown Stoneware Crock

What a crock this estate sale was! I say that lovingly as we walked through the backyard of the home having the sale this past Sunday and saw this 8 gallon blue crown stoneware crock in all of it's glory. We fell in love when we set eyes on it. It was really dirty and had some pretty severe paint stains all over the side of it, but we could see past the dirt into the full potential...

Autumn in the City: NYC Photo Roundup

We spent the bulk of last week in New York. I travel up often to work in the Brooklyn Etsy offices and we always enjoy posting a little roundup of the sites, scenes and eats once back home. We are guilty of being die hard creatures of habit, so we usually like to hit up all of our favorite places and do all of our favorite things while in the city — but this trip proved to bring on some new adventures outside of our norm so we wanted to share some of the highlights from the trip here on the blog today.

Money Tree #Fail

So... After the two posts where we showed how we carefully transplanted the 12 year old money tree from my old office into a new planter here at home and were elated when we began to see new growth — the inevitable happened...

Garden Update: Small & Indoor Propagated Plants

The last weekend in August we rounded up all of the little propagation projects we had going on and took them out back to plant in containers. We've had a lot of luck with regrowing herbs using the cutting/propagation in water method. Find the full step by step method for doing so in this post about regrowing mint and this post where we regrew rosemary. The full lot of freshly planted cuttings are captured in the shot above. It's been just over 2 weeks since planting them all so we thought it was fitting to give an update on all the smaller plants we're looking over these days.

Throwback: Tim's Back To School Lunch Roundup

For many, today marks the first day of the school season — we've had so much fun seeing all the Back to School photos popping up in our Facebook feeds. In preparation for this time of year, Tim published a fun throwback series all about his favorite school lunches his mom used to make when he was going to school over on E.A.T. last week.

Long Weekend Basics: Labor Day Weekend

Well hello September! Time feels like it's been flying by this summer and we have to admit, autumn is always warmly welcomed in our book. For some reason, even though it's still summer, just knowing we are in September makes it feel more like fall. Who else is ready?

Tim and I were both able to take a long weekend to celebrate Labor Day and ended up mainly hanging close to home here in Richmond. We did get to celebrate with friends at a cookout on Sunday evening and ventured out to the market Saturday morning (big surprise there, right?), but overall we really took the time to try and continue to get things cleaned up and organized around the house. Sometimes it's so nice to just have an extra day in the mix to get things done.
