Richmond Magazine: Best BBQ

Have you seen the latest issue of Richmond Magazine? We've been keeping quiet about it until now, but I've been excited to share a peek here on the blog since I was one of the contributing writers (among many I admire) to the cover story — all about BBQ. You just do not turn down an opportunity to eat BBQ and write about it, right?

How To: Make a DIY Birdcage Veil for Your Wedding

Image by Tori Watson of Marvelous Things Photography

Back in the spring, Tim hinted at my making the veil I wore for our wedding. I really wanted to wait to publish the tutorial for making it here on the blog until I had a good final shot from wearing it. Well that day has come and passed — so today we're talking all about how to make your own birdcage veil!

Beach Eats: Ahi Tuna Bites

While honeymooning, one of our favorite snacks and pre-dinner appetizers to make and eat was thinly sliced pieces of raw tuna — you heard me.

Weekend Basics

It was a slower weekend around here where we got to shop the farmer's market, take walks with Basil through the Fan and just generally enjoy not having so many weekend plans (like weddings and graduations).

How To: Make Mulberry Butter

As you know, we've been enjoying the fruits of the wild rogue mulberry tree growing and bursting with ripe mulberries here in the city:

How To: Make Whipped Cream from Scratch

There aren't many things quite like fresh whipped cream made from scratch — and the funny thing about it is, just how easy it can be to make at home. Once you make a batch of your own, you may never buy another can or tub again.

Crowdsourced: Wedding Photos

It's been 2 1/2 weeks since the wedding and we finally feel like things are starting to feel like normal again! While we excitedly wait to see the final shots from our wedding photographer, it's been so much fun to see different glimpses of the big day pop up across our Facebook and Instagram feeds from different friends and family that helped us celebrate.

Beach Eats: Pimento Cheese Wars

Saying that Tim and I are big fans of pimento cheese might be a bit of an understatement. Tim makes a tried and true version we love and you might recall my favorite dish from last year's Broad Appetit being the fried pimento cheese fritters. Related — we were bummed to miss this year's Broad Appetit, but were booking it to the beach for our honeymoon instead.

While honeymooning, we picked up a tub of pimento cheese spread during our first big trip to the market and all I can say is, our snack creations seemed to get crazier and crazier, each outdoing the last. Things started out rather tame with a healthy dollap of pimento cheese on a wide, thin cracker...

Sparkling Mulberry Summer Cocktail

For those that do not follow along with my food blog, E.A.T., we not only get to try some amazing food, we also get to enjoy a cocktail or two from time to time!

Weekend Basics: Dads & Grads

It was a big weekend for us with milestones and celebrations for my son's high school graduation and Father's Day all falling within the same weekend!

Matching Tattoos: Honeymooning

As some of you might know, Mary and I talk on and off about getting some sort of coordinating tattoos. Though it's something we'll probably never do, it's always a fun topic of conversation and inspiration. I've talked about getting a butcher knife along the inside of my forearm or some other variation of hungarian foliage and we like the idea of coming up with something that could play off one another in some way.

Origins Farm: Stuffed Pattypan Squash Recipe

Earlier today we introduced you to the fine folks behind Origins Farm. Now we're going to share a new recipe we came up with after spotting and falling in love with the assortment of fresh pattypan squashes and other produce Origins Farm brought to the market — barley stuffed pattypan squash.

Eating With Origins Farm

Today we're excited to announce the start to a new partnership we're launching this summer with Origins Farm. We've teamed up to bring you a series of summer recipes that use key ingredients from their farm produce — which you've gotten a tasty glimpse of in a few of our Weekend Basics roundups from our trips to the South of the James Farmer's Market:

For those unfamiliar, Origins Farm is a small, family-run farm in Hanover, Virginia — owned and operated by husband and wife Alistar Harris & Rebecca Ponder. How cute and fun are these two?

Beach Eats: Scallop & Vegetable Skewers with Wahoo Steak

Honeymooning at the beach gave us the perfect excuse to cook up nightly dinners incorporating fresh seafood and veggies — filled with so much flavor and healthy at the same time. Today we're sharing the recipe for one of the dinner spreads I made that turned out to be one of our favorites from the week — roasted vegetables, scallops and wahoo steak to share.

Would you like to see our 100+ vacation photos from the honeymoon? If you thought yes, you're in luck since that's what we've got in store for today.

Weekend Basics

Amidst getting back home from honeymooning, trying to clean up and get organized from what feels like a wedding bomb that exploded in our house, we did get up and out a little bit as we continue to feel like we're getting back to normal. Who knew a wedding could take so much physical energy to come back from! Whew!

"Heading Home from Honeymooning in Hatteras"

Say that one five times fast...Oh, and also we've been staying in Salvo, just about 16 miles shy of the cape, but Hatteras made for a better tongue twister title, and we're so close...

Weekend Projects: Wine Cork Crafts

Mary and I aren't ones to shy away from enjoying a good glass of wine here and there. In fact, we've been enjoying a few while we honeymoon at the beach this week. We're also ones to enjoy saving and re-purposing different materials, so you can probably imagine the growing collection of wine corks we have going on...

Bridal Luncheon & Rehearsal Dinner Place Settings

Last Friday before the wedding was filled with fun wedding prep events  — my mother hosted a bridal luncheon at the Virginia Museum of Fine Art's Amuse Restaurant and we enjoyed dinner with the wedding party after the rehearsal at Azzurro, the Italian restaurant where Tim and I first met.

We're looking forward to sharing more pics and details from both the events of the luncheon and rehearsal dinner last Friday in future posts but wanted to quickly share the how the diy place cards we posted about last week at the dinner turned out — and while we're talking table decor, show what we did for the luncheon as well.

Wedding Detail: Monogrammed Pocket Squares

Image from Miniature Rhino

This week while we're honeymooning we thought it would be fun to share some more background behind some of the details we incorporated into the big day. One of the many handmade details from our wedding included hand stitched monogram pocket squares from Jessica of Miniature Rhino on Etsy...

Hitched! 17 Apart Wedding Preview

We made it! Tim and I are officially married as of Saturday and are already relaxing with Basil in a cozy remote beach cottage nestled in Hatteras. We knew we'd have limited internet access while here (which helps force us unplug), and are actually checking in via mobile hotspot — thank you iPhone! It's been fun seeing all the candid wedding photos shared across our Facebook feeds taken from all of our friends and family over the past couple of days — it really is so interesting to get to see a look at the wedding through all the different angles and points of view.
