Fancy That!

We're back again this week, sharing all the smaller things we're into (or fancying, hence the series name) that might not fit into a single post for one reason or another. Sometimes there might be a long list of randomness, other times it might be a single gem — whatever the case, here's what we're into right now.

Over on eHow: Make a Self Sustaining Edible Kitchen Garden

You might already know we are big fans of trying to regrow different kinds of fruits, vegetables and greens from the kitchen scraps otherwise tossed in the trashbin. We've seen great successes with regrowing plants like celery, green onions, sweet potatoes, bok choy, garlic, horseradish root, avocados and even pineapples using little more than water and sun.

Cleaning Up & Grilling Out

We mentioned being able to knock out a few projects around the house over the 3 day weekend that have been on the list for months — well a couple of those included finally cleaning up the garage and creating a dedicated area for the grill out back.

Garden Update: Late Spring 2014

Today we wanted to pop in with a late spring update on all things gardening. We gotta keep it real and let you know that we definitely haven't planted as much as we'd like, and not everything we've tried this year has been a winning success, but other plants have really taken off. We've got a bit of a gardening hodge podge around the house, so today we're going to lay it all out, just the way it is!

The last time we checked in on the state of the garden and new plantings was in early April — you can get the full rundown in this post. Well, it's amazing what 6 weeks can do in terms of growth, so let's take a tour!

Hello, New York! It couldn't be a more beautiful morning in the city as we pop in to say hello today. We'll be checking in this week while working from Brooklyn for the week — and it feels good to be back!

Over on eHow: Restore & Seasoning Cast Iron Skillets

Mary and I love a good vintage find — especially when we come across a diamond in the rough with hidden potential. One trick we've picked up along the way is a fail-proof method for restoring cast iron cookware to its original glory using little more than the self-cleaning setting on our oven. We've detailed out the step-by-step process in our latest guest post for eHow today.

A New Chapter In Purple & Gold: Stephanie's College Graduation

Weekend Basics: Graduation & Mother's Day

This past weekend was filled with celebrations — we watched Stephanie graduate from college, attended the dedication service for my sister's 4 children and celebrated Mother's Day. It's busy weekends like these that remind us how full our lives are with family — so much to celebrate.

How To: Replacing Our Kitchen Sink Garbage Disposal

Today we've got a quick and dirty update for you (emphasis on dirty). The last time we checked in, our kitchen sink looked something like this:

This past weekend Tim replaced the garbage disposal underneath the kitchen sink and while not the most pleasant or visual of updates, we thought it might be worth sharing for those also thinking about trying to replace something like this yourselves!

Over on eHow: DIY Plastic Toy Animal Planters

We already told you we were tackling a project involving succulents and another excuse to use my hole saw drill attachment over the weekend — what we didn't tell you was how adorable these these painted animal planters turned out!

Weekend Basics

Hola and happy Cinco de Mayo — how is it May already (May 5th, moreover)? This weekend we mentioned we'd be pretty landlocked due to the bike course for the Collegiate Road National Championships lining up in our neighborhood. Well, not only did we have a blast watching the race throughout the last couple days, we also knocked out a bunch of things on the old to-do list while hanging close to home and had a little time to branch out and about within walking distance from the house. It was a busy weekend to say the least!

Where We Found Our Fiddle Leaf Fig Tree

As an update to our office transformation earlier this week, we mentioned ordering a fiddle leaf fig tree to complete the greener elements of the new space — and it's finally here! We've wanted some larger indoor plants and after studying the best types of trees for indoors, we liked the look of both the rubber plant and fiddle leaf fig.

Over on eHow: Decorating With Ladders

Image sources: 1, 2, 3, 4

Ever since stumbling across this amazing find of an antique ladder (with tons of local history) at a nearby alley sale, we've grown to love the idea of using old ladders as decorative storage for otherwise tight spaces. It's amazing how versatile ladders can be, housing the ability to solve storage dilemmas for almost every room of the house — living rooms, bathrooms, closets, shelving, the garden — even overhead storage!
