Food Inc. Movie Giveaway

We love this film so much we're giving two brand new copies away to two lucky readers. Full details below the dotted line (if you want to skip ahead).

***Update: This giveaway has ended, find the lucky winners at the bottom of the post. Stay tuned for future giveaways right here at 17 Apart! ***

By now, it shouldn't be a secret that food plays a major role in each of our lives and throughout the course of our relationship. The enjoyment of food has always been something we've taken great pleasure in, however, over the past few years learning where our food comes from, buying it locally and as sustainably as we can has become more important than ever. Today we're thrilled we have the opportunity to share why...

Back in 2009 when I was living in Brooklyn, I put the documentary Food Inc. on my Netflix queue. I'd seen a preview for it and had been increasingly interested in learning more about the American food system, though never really thought too much about it. Honestly, I thought the documentary would be some interesting food for thought (pun intended) but never expected it to actually change my life in the way it did. Since watching the film and then watching it over again with Tim, we've made small changes and integrated new choices in the we think about, shop, and support the food system.

All in all, it's a totally unpretentious film that opened up a whole new world to us we never would have known about. Watching the film initially got us thinking and taking small steps. Over the past 3 or so years, those small steps have added up into what we like to think is a clearer path to sustainable eating and living. It really helped us feel like each small step we make as individuals does make a difference.

Food Inc. seeded the reasons why we support local Farmer's Markets, planted our organic backyard garden, began composting, are careful where we choose to shop for groceries and thoughtful about the food choices we make while dining out. Of course, we are far from perfect and it's taken us about 2-3 years to even get to where we are now (with lot's of room to grow further), but I can say with certainty we are more conscience and thoughtful than not.

Tim's been lucky enough to actually visit Polyface farms (the featured farm in the movie) on a food pickup with Mark Lilly of Farm to Family. I'd love the chance to visit at some point and have been toying with the idea of signing up for one of their "lunatic" farm tours. So proud to know Polyface played such a major role in Food Inc and that this farm is in good ole Virginia.

While we're definitely not trying to push anything on anyone, this is something that's important enough to us that we want to share with anyone willing and interested. I'm always amazed how each time I watch this documentary I learn something new. We hope you'll take a solid hour and thirty minutes of your time to watch it and draw your own conclusions!

Special Note: In a wonderful coincidence, we just got word Food Inc will be showing as a rebroadcast on PBS tonight: August 9, 2011. Check your local listings right here in the event you can tune in!

  1. Bountiful in our garden, plus my favs - zucchini and cucumbers! One easy dish my family loves is sauteed zucchini. Slice the zucchini add onions and cook with olive oil till soft. Yesterday we picked our first butternut squash...first year to plant! Looking for some yummy recipes for the squash.

  2. At the moment I'm really enjoying my homegrown yellow courgettes (or zucchini as you guys would say), particularly in a risotto with lots of lemon! Really like the sound of Food Inc, sounds right up my alley.

  3. My fave summer vegetable: tomatoes, most varieties - technically a fruit, but legally a vegetable, so I think it will work for these purposes :) Freshly picked, still warm from the sun, just sliced up; probably my favorite side dish all summer long!

I've never seen Farm, Inc, but I've heard good things from many. It's such an important topic from a variety of perspectives; health, environment, social. I'm certainly far from perfect, as well, but I do strive to make responsible choices for the most part. Would love to see the film sometime.

  54. I had seen Food Inc back in 2009 as well, and though I haven't made the drstic changes you have, it definitely persuaded me to buy locally when I can! We have a wonderful farmer's market in our town, and I find that the vegetables even taste better when I buy local. Thanks for the awesome giveaway! My favorite summer veggie is peppers!
