Ladder Blanket Storage

We've got a ladder in our living room and it's holding our extra blankets! Today we're sharing the background behind this little update.

Back in April we picked up one of the coolest ladders we've ever come across. It was tall, very narrow and best of all — made up of a very well worn wood. We were so delighted in this find, because the people holding alley sale we'd scored it from were clearing out the majority of pieces from the garage of a previous window display designer for the old Miller & Rhoads here in Richmond. The Miller & Rhoads department store is a local legend, so imagining where and what the ladder might have been used for has been half the fun.

We basically tossed it in the car, poking out the sunroof, and brought it back home to figure out what to do with down the road. Then the wedding took over our entire lives.

So, now that we're a couple months down that proverbial road, we're testing out the ladder in different places around the house. So far, we've got it leaning against the wall in our family room acting as extra blanket storage:

Id' seen and loved the idea of using a ladder for towel and blanket storage, and used the following images as inspiration:

We were excited to get two matching gray throws for our wedding to replace the mismatched ones we had before and have the new ones hanging across each couch for regular use, but for those times when the kids or other company is in town and we need another blanket, the ladder has been coming in handy — and actually helps tie all the mismatched blankets we have together.

Side note — the red blanket was recently given to us as a wedding gift by our cousin, Jennifer, who had hand crocheted it for my grandmother to use before she passed. We love that it was handmade and having it in our little collection.

Here's a view of the entire living space to give you an idea of how it all looks as a whole right now:

We're not sure this configuration will be the final spot or function for the ladder, but we're digging it for now.

As usual, we'll keep you posted!

you guys get more interesting by the minute.

tim, I made the drive (four hours now) to ellwood Thompson to get the Kim Kim, but they were out. I'll be back.

fifteen years ago my husband and I lived on parkwood avenue and we walked to a very different ellwood Thompson. We live in Blacksburg now, but I love seeing how Richmond has evolved into such a cool little city.

    1. Ellamama, Uncle Jerry himself! Please send me your address and if I come across some KimKim sauce I will send it to you or at the very least let us know when you are in town and I will make sure someone has it! Yes, Elwood Thompson has certainly changed over the years. I am excited to be on the board for the hopefully soon to come Richmond Food Coop! Love for you to visit when we get up and running!

Enjoy your Saturday and thanks for your comments!

  3. Your living room looks really good with the ladder. I have a bamboo one that I bought for cheap from a plant nursery. It was made for gardening, but I love how the rungs taper at one end. I put it in my bathroom to hang towels on, instead of a storage shelf, and it works out great. It rains a lot where I live and I can still put my towels away neatly, even if they’re not completely dry!
