DIY Valentine: Pomegranate Seed Ice Cube Hearts

With Valentine's Day (quite literally) right around the corner, we have a simple and fun little project you can pull off in no time — heart shaped pomegranate seed ice cubes. Mix them with your favorite drink for a little Valentine's surprise!

Pomegranate seeds are one of those superfruit wonders — delicious and ridiculously good for you at the same time. Plus, they look great frozen into the shape of little hearts.

To make these heart shaped ice cubes, you'll simply need the seeds from 1 pomegranate, heart shaped ice cube trays and water to fill the trays. The trick to removing pomegranate seeds from the flesh is slicing the fruit in half lengthwise, then literally smacking the skin side of one half with a wooden spoon against your hand over a bowl.

You'll be left with a handful of perfect pomegranate seeds ready for use!

Just spoon a few seeds into the ice trays:

They will rest at the bottom of the mold so your ice cubes will have a cute little clump at the front of the heart. Feel free to spoon in some of the pomegranate juice during this step if you want your entire ice cube to have a reddish-pink tint to it with a little more of the pomegranate flavor:

Add water and freeze:

Pop these guys out of the trays from the freezer and look — you've got heart shaped pomegranate seed ice cubes!

You can see the difference in the tint of the ice cubes where we added a little extra juice — some have a more consistently red color while the others remain translucent with the cluster of seeds peaking out:

Toss a handful of these guys into a clear glass and pour with your drink of choice — we kept it simple with a little sparkling mineral water:

Watch as the bubbles fizz up the glass and your icy pomegranate hearts begin to mix and mingle.

The ice hearts with more juice will begin to tint your drink and add just a touch of pomegranate flavor to each sip:

We love how versatile these ice cubes can be — mix things up by adding a splash of spirits for a more grown up cocktail or add them to a glass of pink lemonade to surprise the kiddos.

What will you be mixing up for Valentine's Day?

  2. Very cute. Have you ever tried deseeding by cutting a thin stip off the bottom and then cutting a cone shape out ot the middle of the flower end? After that, you score the edges and break apart. You don't lose one juicy morsel this way. There are videos on Youtube. I tried it recently and found it the easiest way ever!
