Weekend Basics: Birthdays, Bookcases and Vacuums — Oh My!

Folks, how is it the last day of June — who's with me? We've been savoring the weekends lately and made little plans for venturing out in order to relax, which of course meant we ended up tackling a bunch of things around the house. Such is life.

Fancy That!

We're back again this week, sharing all the smaller things we're into (or fancying, hence the series name) that might not fit into a single post for one reason or another. Sometimes there might be a long list of randomness, other times it might be a single gem — whatever the case, here's what we're into right now.

Over on eHow: DIY Leather Valet Tray

Soon after building our new glass tabletop entryway console last week, we realized we needed some storage options for all the little odds and ends that end up getting dropped off at the front door — hello clutter! To solve the immediate need, we whipped together this simple riveted leather catch-all tray, which we're sharing the full step-by-step tutorial for in our latest post over on eHow.

That Time a Simple Painting Makeover Took Down the Walls

Who's ready for a long, wordy post with lots of pictures all about scary home repairs? We'll admit, it's a doozy, but we're excited to be on the other end of this particular home "project," so let's get started!

Recently, we mentioned being able to complete the work on Stephanie's bedroom, of which we've had in the works for almost a year. In our 2014 goals and resolutions post, we also declared wanting to complete 3 larger (and necessary) exterior home repairs, which believe it or not, were all actually connected to painting Stephanie's room. Before sharing the before and after shots (and everything in-between), we wanted to go ahead and give the full backstory on how the simple idea of re-painting her walls from lime green to a nice neutral hue turned into a year-long project with lots of learning along the way. We can file this one under the "small project that turned into major renovations" folder — and whew, are we glad we can finally call this update complete.

Weekend Basics

This past weekend was one of those that we didn't want to end — it was filled with new adventures, a new brunch spot and even some foraging & vintage "finding." Here's the full rundown —

Over on eHow: Our DIY Entryway Table

So, our entryway got a little update this weekend! That's right, we updated the space and even better yet, made the new console table ourselves for our latest project post over on eHow.

Summer Breeze: Installing Our Bedroom Ceiling Fan

Last week we detailed out how we updated the chandelier from our bedroom and reinstalled it in the small adjacent room we use as a walk-in closet. Today I'm going to share all the details about swapping out the ceiling fan we took down from this smaller room to reinstall in our bedroom (cause that is what I do).

Tim opening his Father's Day card from Basil

It was another beautiful weekend here in Richmond and it's the start to what looks like a sweltering hot week ahead as we move towards the first official day of summer on Saturday. We ended up opening the house for a little get together on Saturday evening to welcome in summer with friends and hosted a Father's Day cookout on Sunday, so it was a busy weekend where we actually got a chance to put the camera down, enjoying catching up with company.

In our latest post for eHow, were detailing out how to create these giant black and white art prints from your favorite family photos — all for $11 or less. Can't you just see the excitement on Basil's oversized face?

What's Old is New Again: Our Chandelier Makeover

A couple weekends ago we crossed off some home lighting projects from the old never-ending "things we want to get done around the house" list. The short of these updates is — we switched out the tired chandelier in our bedroom with the ceiling fan in our closet space and gave both fixtures a little updating along the way. Today we're going to share all the details around removing this beauty of an old fixture from our bedroom, how we updated it and where it's now cozily dwelling.

Weekend Basics

The weekends here in Richmond have been exceptionally nice — so great for getting outdoors. This weekend we balanced tackling a large indoor project and taking breaks to get outside and enjoy this beautiful weather!

Probably the biggest event from this weekend was beginning to take on the restoration of the plaster wall in Stephanie's room...

Over on eHow: Father's Day Wine Crate Charging Station

Working in restaurants through college, Mary's amassed quite the collection of wooden wine crates. We use them for storing all sorts of things around the house and had an extra one on hand that was perfect for our latest DIY project for eHow. I ended up transforming one of these lidded wooden wine crates into a self-concealed gadget charging station!

This Post Brought to You by Basil & the Letter Y

After mostly cleaning up from Saturday's party and preparing for dinner outside the next day, we heard some "suspect" barking coming from the back room. After a quick check to make sure everything was OK, we captured this little gem of a video we thought you might get a kick out of too.

Recipe: Individual Watermelon Feta Salad Wedges

Summertime means getting to enjoy watermelons at their seasonal peak and this past weekend we cut into our first seedless treat of the season! Tim's the main point for most things food in our relationship, so he was in charge of the majority of our weekend party menu. That being said, I was excited to put together these individual watermelon feta wedges as part of the larger spread.

How Has It Been A Year Already?

As you may already know, Tim and I celebrated our first wedding anniversary over the weekend. It's amazing to think just how fast time flies and at the same time, just how far we've come over the past year. It's even crazier to think that this year also marks 10 years of being together. We've both changed and evolved into different people over the past decade, but the part I'm most thankful for is that we've made those transitions together.

Weekend Basics

It was a weekend of celebrations and celebrate we did! The three main events of our weekend included hosting a party at the house in honor of Stephanie's recent graduation from JMU, heading over to Richmond's Broad Appétit event where I had the opportunity to serve as one of the 8 event judges and perhaps one of the biggest celebrations of all — yesterday marked Mary and my's first wedding anniversary.
