Over on eHow: Storage Trunk Bench & Coffee Table

Our latest project could basically be considered a small-space wonder. If you've been following along with our progress on updating the 1976 airstream that our friends, Josiah and Jocelyn, recently purchased, you'll know it's a small space that could benefit from creative, multi-purpose storage solutions.

Our latest project in collaboration with eHow came straight from an idea that sparked while updating the airstream. We'd originally thought about incorporating a storage trunk for use as a coffee table with added storage (not a new idea), but then it struck — what if it could work even harder?

That's when we came up with the idea to create a flippable "trunk topper" with one upholstered side for additional seating or to use as an ottoman:

On the underside we installed a smooth hardwood board to act as a coffee table, game table or other hardworking surface:

The topper rests right on top of the trunk, which can be used to store blankets or other odds and ends — just flip to use whichever side is needed at the moment. After making it, we realize we'd basically made a glorified lap desk, ha, but it works so well as a multi-purpose piece of furniture!

We're looking forward to bringing the trunk and topper with us to set up in the airstream on our next visit and will be sure to post an update here on the blog once it's set up. Head on over to eHow to see more pictures of the storage trunk with step by step instructions for making a one of your own.

  1. Amazing work! I love old trunks so much! I have few that I fixed myself and now they are great part of the interior!
