How To: Holly Holiday Place Settings

Yesterday we left off with some of the decorating preparations we made for the holiday meal recipe photo-shoot Tim worked with Relay Foods to create. Just as we did with the Thanksgiving meal details, today we wanted to share how we changed things up a little to create festive holiday place settings.

For the holiday meal, we pulled out our China and silver collections for a more traditional feel. To add a little festive and rustic charm to complement the farm table, we paired the fine china and utensils with simple cloth napkins, a sprig of holly with berries all tied in place with jute twine:

A place setting like this is as simple as can be — the key is in folding and placing the napkin in the center of the regular place setting instead of underneath your forks. Use what you have around your house — you'll need napkins (we actually used Tekla dish towels from Ikea!), scissors, jute twine and fresh sprigs of holly or other seasonal greenery:

Note: If you have small children or pets around, keep in mind that holly leaves have sharp points on the leaves and holly berries can be toxic. Swap in other seasonal greenery or fresh herbs if you prefer.

Once you've trimmed the holly sprigs to fit the size of the napkins, roll or fold napkins under to get that cylindrical feel. I originally folded our napkins into rectangles, then just folded each side under:

Flip napkin over and secure holly sprig in place with a few wraps of jute twine:

Complete wrapping by tying excess twine into a bow over the holly sprig:

Place holly sprig place setting in the center of your plates to create a festive focal point:

Pretty simple, right? Find a preview of the holiday dishes and recipes Tim created for the day right here on Relay Foods.

  1. I love your blog and enjoy reading it immensely, however I am a little disappointed that you are apparently joining the ranks of the "politically correct" crowd and not using the word Christmas when what you are so obviously doing is decorating for your Christmas dinner.
