The "JOYS" of dog ownership...

Sometimes when Basil doesn't know we are watching, we catch him doing the funniest things. For example, the other day, we snuck up on him as he was propping himself up on the couch to get a good look out the front windows...

He just stood there like this, staring out the window, for about 5 minutes — all ears:

Sometimes he'd break the stance to peer out the other window:

While we're discussing the things we catch Basil doing while our eyes aren't on him, we thought we'd share what we walked in on when we got home from dinner the other night:

Remember the wooden stamp letters we'd placed around the house as holiday decorations? Well, Basil seemed to think it wasn't such a joyful event when we left him at home and went out to dinner. He decided to remind us not to forget to sweep the entire area of small objects before leaving the house...

Only the "O" survived this particular battle:

Oh Basil, how you keep us on our toes!

What funny things do you catch your pet getting into when they think you aren't looking?

  1. We catch our dachshunds tipping over the laundry hamper or pulling a coat down to get to the treat crumbs in our jackets or pants all the time. This morning our Newfie stole leftovers off the counter when I left the kitchen for less than 10 seconds! "Joy" is right sometimes, but you have to love them.

  2. Unfortunately, I don't own a dog because of allergies - but my brother does. Recently he told me that his dog chewed some of his sofa pillows while he was out. Shortly afterwards, I came across this picture on Facebook: http://alvinalexander.com/sites/default/files/photos/dog-destroys-couch-funny.png

    Haha!

  3. Hehehe, my dog does that propping up thing too! She's only little (border collie x jack russel) but she likes to climb as high as she can.
And oh now, how destructive! I'm glad to not be the only one who has to dog proof the house from anything chewable but those stamps looked absolutely gorgeous :(

The most gorgeous things our dog does though is:
    1. Sit in the back courtyard in the sun and stare off into the distant sky - I like to think she's pondering the universe
    2. Hides under the couch and makes little growly and mewing. We call her our Couch Monster.

    1. I love when they sit in the sun like that so peacefully — and yes! You are not alone on sweeping the entire house before leaving, ha! It's become quite the ritual!

  4. LOL!!! I'm sorry, I don't mean to laugh but I was just telling my Mom how on Thursday's when I have to leave Reuben at home he takes a decorative wood ball out of a bucket and chews it up...in the middle of the living room floor, so there is no mistaking that we won't notice. I thought it was just him, and I don't get too mad because I feel like a rotten pet parent for not taking him to work. Ahhh those pups, they are just too cute :)

  5. Oh I love Basil...and every Weim I see!
We walked in to see our entire living roof covered in fluffy stuffing from the sofa one time.
They are so worth it though! ;)

  6. I'm so glad it's not just my dogs who do this sort of thing. Two weeks ago my husband and I went out to run some errands. I had been planning on baking when I got home so I had some butter softening on the counter. I was smart enough to move it so the dogs couldn't reach, but I never thought our younger dog would decided to eat a bag of flour!

  7. Our dog Nigel (a small rescue dog) MUST be with my slippers at the start and at the end of the day. We can't go to bed until the Slippers are in their proper place, and I can't get started working (I work from home) until the Slippers are on the floor by my desk. He gets really excited when I put them on, too, and will chase me, nipping at the slippers. I don't really know where this fixation came from, but I guess it's better than other things!

Just discovered your site--interesting! Can't wait to try to grow my own celery and green onions!
